I do not use Windows anymore. I use Linux. Currently Ubuntu and Xubuntu 7.10. I have tried various versions of linux like Fedora (formerly Red Hat), Slackware. Ubuntu allows you to get on more easily with what is quite a geeky operating system. Ubuntu has various options for installing.

• LiveCD (the operating system runs from CD and in memory, which doesnt require any installation to hard disk and allows you to test drive Ubuntu without affecting anything)
• Dual boot setup, run Ubuntu and Windows from the same computer. If you are going to try this method, use the excellent gParted LiveCD to free up some space on the hard drive first.
• as the only operating system

If you are new to Linux and Ubuntu, I would dual boot for a year or so before moving across permanently so you can get experience with what it can and can't do. The only things it doesn't do for me are play DRM protected content and recent games without too much grief. The things it can do are equally on a par with Windows XP, even Vista and more. As linux was founded on Unix and is used for applications other than pure desktop computing there are some intersting tools to play with.
